Exotic Breeds of Chickens
Polish
The polish chicken is one of the most popular of the exotic breeds. They can be distinguished by their feathery head. They are very calm and quiet, as their feathers make them not be able to see very well. Their egg color is white. They come in several different breeds:
Mottled Houdans
Similar to the Polish as they also have feathers on their heads. They originated in Houdan, France. They are good egg layers and lay white eggs.
Crevecoeurs
These chickens also originated in France. They get up to eight pounds and lay white eggs.
Sultans
This cutie originates in Europe. They are extremely rare. Don't let their high price discourage you though. They are totally worth it.
Cochin
My personal favorite! These teddy bears are excellent pets. They are very tame, and perfect for kids. They have a lot of feathers, and are super soft, so kids love them. They come in a ton of different varieties, but I am only going to list the most popular.
French Black Copper Maran
This is probably one of the rarest breed in the United States. They have become extremely popular because of the insanely high price of their eggs, which are from $40 to $200 for a half dozen. Yea, that's right: a half dozen!!!!!!!!! That's pretty darn expensive. Their name gives away their origin, so I don't even need to say it. Their eggs are a dark brown, and sometimes a dark purple. Unless you are rich, I wouldn't eat the eggs! I would sell them!
Cuckoo Maran
This also originates in France and has almost the same color eggs as the French Black Copper Maran. It resembles the barred rock.
White Faced Black Spanish
These are very pretty birds. The roosters have a big comb and have a very pretty combination of colors. The hens lay white eggs.
Sumatras
This breed originated in Sumatra, Asia. They are a very pretty chicken, but are, like most exotic breeds, rare. They lay a white egg.
